Mental Health Books

The books listed below are ones we recommend as great resources. Over the years, these books have proven to be very beneficial to our clients. If you love or hate a resource, please let us know. We base our recommendations on our clients’ experiences, so we would love to hear from you, whether it's a good or bad review.

The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts

This is another great book to recommend to couples. Dr. Gary Chapman has theorized that we all prefer to be shown love in one of 5 different ways. He has categorized these love languages into:

  1. Words of Affirmation

  2. Acts of Service

  3. Receiving Gifts

  4. Quality Time

  5. Physical Touch

The book provides a quiz for you and you partner to take to find out which love language you each are, and goes into what each love language entails and how it applies to your relationship.

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work: A Practical Guide from the Country’s Foremost Relationship Expert

This is a go-to book recommendation for couples. Dr. John Gottman provides scientifically based research findings on the things that predict divorce, as well as what is required to make a marriage successful. It’s an easy read filled with wonderful exercises couples can do together to both evaluate and practice each of the seven principles.

How to Survive the Loss of a Love

This book is not only about grieving the loss of a love by death; it covers what the authors refer to as “obvious” and “not-so obvious” losses and includes multiple tips for surviving and learning to move forward with one’s life in a healthy way.

Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy

This book covers a multitude of topics and is specifically useful to those suffering with a mood disorder such as anxiety or depression. Particularly helpful sections focus on learning how to build one’s self-esteem, dealing with stress, and learning to cope with it all.

Self-Care Toolkit: Let's Build Your Self-Care Practice

Anaston J. Scott J.D. created this toolkit with you in mind. This printable PDF guide is for anyone who values taking care of themselves. If you are ready to start doing the work, you have taken the first step! Spend some time "with self" and make self-care a part of your lifestyle.
